Tools of the trade

Hi everyone, I thought from time to time I would post some of the tools I use to assist me in painting, tools of the trade so to speak. The first is one I use all of the time, it could possibly be free if you happen to have one around the house. One of my teachers put me on to this, it's a picture frame mat. In the first photo you can see how I cut the mat at the corners so you have one long side and one short side on each piece. The second photo I show you sizing it to match the shape of your canvas. The third photo shows me looking through it at my still life set up to determine how it will look on my canvas as far as composition goes. You can use this outside to narrow down your view and pick a suitable landscape for your canvas. The last photo shows how I use it most, I crop photos with it. Again adjust it to the shape of your canvas and move it around on your photo to crop and get the best composition. Also I'm sure you can see my messy studio in the background. I am planning to have a "cleaning out the studio sale" soon. So check back for that, I'll have original art at very reasonable prices. I hope the mat idea is new for some of you and I'll follow it up with a few others. Barb

Hello, I painted this from a photo I took in the park. I didn't paint much detail in the face as I wanted the focus to be the little dog. It is in oil on a 8 X 10 canvas panel. I did not sell either one of my paintings in the art festival Sunday but they are on display all week so who knows.

Peaceful Morn

Hi, This is one I started at my workshop last weekend but did a lot of changes to it and added the sheep. I'm really trying to look at values, slow down and think before I paint. I thought this title fit, it felt like a peaceful morning to me. It's in oil on a 8 X 10 canvas panel. Off to the local art festival today, I'm volunteering and really really hoping to get an award.

Different Strokes

Hi, Karin Jurick has started this new blog called Different strokes for different folks. I think it's a great idea, every Wednesday she posts a new photograph on her blog and invites all of us to paint it. I'm honored to paint one of her photographs, thinking about her painting the same image. There is link to her in my list of blogs if you would like to check it out. Here is the image she posted yesterday and I thought I'd give it a go. I think it is interesting to see all of the different ways different artists paint the same thing. This is in oil on a 8 X 10 canvas panel. This Sunday is the Mason arts festival, 3rd annual. I have two pieces in to be juried, wish me luck. I'll be busy all weekend, I'll be there all day Saturday, taking in the art and then helping hang it and then volunteering again on Sunday.

Back from my workshop

Hi there, I took a workshop this weekend with an artist named Roger Hueck from Cincinnati. He started out with a presentation talking about what makes good art and showing us paintings and ways to improve them. I had heard most of the things he mentioned but it never hurts to hear them again. We spent the rest of that day and all day Sunday painting with him going from person to person offering help as needed. I took the workshop with a dear friend and enjoying spending time with her. This painting I did on Sunday and really took my time, I used my little transparent red window and looked through it constantly to check values. I think values are everything. Anyway I like my result, I have another one I'm still working on . We have quite the mess here today, the hurricane that came from Texas got here and was pushed into us by the one from the Pacific coast. We had 80 mile hr. winds and trees down all over, two of my neighbors cars have trees on them, we were lucky. Hope things are well with all of you.

Landscape, re-worked

Hi, I posted this recently and after taking some of Frank Gardner's very much appreciated advice I made some changes. He suggested I needed to darken the path behind the orange sunlight and add more detail in the foreground. I added more detail in the path in front and lots of trees in the foreground. Check out the painting before here and let me know if you think the changes improved it. This is in oil on a 11 X 14 canvas panel. I am taking another workshop Saturday and Sunday, I won't come home with anything complete the workshop is supposed to give you great starts. See you soon. Barb

La Bohemienne

Good Morning, I put some exercises together for my group that meets on Monday morning. One of them was to graph off our canvas and paint upside down. We painted this painting of Hals, La Bohemienne. I covered the canvas with paint trying to just paint shapes and colors and then we turned everything upright and I continued to add details. It is in oil on a 11 X 14 canvas. Can't you just see her carrying several steins of beer in one hand? lol. If you checked this post out before you may notice the painting is a bit different, I painted the background again and I like it better.

Benny

Hello, This 5 X 7 is in oil painted on a canvas panel. This is one of my grand dogs, I took the photo a while back and my grandson wanted me to paint it. I take care of my grandson a few hours in the afternoon four days a week, so while he naps it nice to paint something small and quick. Fun to paint and I think it came out looking like Benny, that was what I hoped for, lol. Have a great day!

Portrait, 8 X 10

Good Morning, I was watching Dave Darrow do a live painting demo Monday night and he was painting a cool looking dude. It made me want to paint something similar so I looked through my husband's book on the old west and found this guy. It's in oil on a 8 X 10 canvas panel. Hope you think my guy is a cool dude. Anyway it was fun to do, more fun to paint people you don't know I think. I think Dave is painting Wednesday and Thursday night, check him out.
