Hi there, This is a portrait I started at my lesson last week and then finished on my own. My teacher
Chuck Marshall pointed out an interesting thing I was doing with my brush. I would load my brush and then lay the paint on and then stroke it a second time. I never realized I was doing that, so great to find out. When you are laying down that final stroke you want it clean and I was pushing it into the paint underneath which muddies it up. I am enjoying my lessons with him and I think it has been very helpful. This is oil on a 8 X 10 canvas panel.

An excellent lesson. We often do unconscious movements. I think I can see cleaner color on her right side after you received that tip.
Like the handling of the mouth.
Thank you Bill. I am concentrating now on laying down clean paint and not playing with it. Hard to break habits. I know in the past I have painted some very gray paintings from over blending my colors.
Chuck sounds like an excellent teacher- he had to have lingered by your easel long enough to notice your habit of double stroking. Not all instructors take that time. Sounds like you're in good hands!
Fabulous portrait Barbara. And your teachers sounds amazing.
Hi Susan, I do think Chuck is a very good teacher. I have made some good changes just in the few weeks I have been with him.
Hi there Liz, Chuck is an excellent artist and a very good teacher, you don't always find both. Glad you like the portrait, wasn't sure of my background choice.
Thank you Josh, thanks for stopping by too. See you at Susans.
I like the Chiaroscuro effect here. (I think I spelled that wrong). In other words, nice contrast between light and dark. Isn't it amazing when a teacher points out something like that? Sometimes that makes all the difference between a good and great painting.
Hey Anita, This teacher has been very helpful to me. Several changes I've made that I hope will in time make a big difference.
Nice to see that all are getting some nice information from your blog..
