Hello there, This is another piece painted in town on location recently, oil on a 8 x 10 Raymar panel. One of the galleries in town will be having a show for our plein air pieces in December so that's exciting.
I did paint outside Tuesday night, we met around 8 set up and watched the street lights come on. We had a full moon , I planned that don't you know? lol It was perfect, no wind and warm weather. The longer we were out there the more we could see, with the street lights you could see all of the detail of the buildings along the street. My painting came out pretty good, you don't really know what you have until you get back inside. I had a headlamp and I couldn't really aim it at my painting because of the glare so I painted pretty much from the light of the streetlight. I set my palette up the same all the time so I knew what colors I was working with and I was looking mostly at values. Anyway it was fun and I would try it again.

We had a full moon the other evening as our soybean harvest lasted past dark. I just had to try my hand at painting that. It was fun!

Hi Barbara, Lovely catching up. Beautiful painting. I have never tried painting in the semi dark but know of people who painted by candle light to mimick the old masters. I would love to try it out some time.

Hi Liz, I guess this post could be confusing. I painted this piece a few weeks ago and I did a different painting outside the other night. This house had sunlight on it but I guess if it were brightly illuminated at night it might appear like this too, hmmm

Very nice shadows on the house and plants/weeds next to it. Let us see the night painting. I was set to take a workshop on painting nightscapes at the Scottsdale Artists School but it got cancelled. The prospectus talked about learning to mix paint in the dark. Did you learn how to do this?

Hi Bill, I always set up my palette the same and of course that helped. I mostly thought about value out there, they always say if the value is right it will read correctly. I worked pretty much like I do in the daylight I did a thinned down sketch and went from there. I did turn my light on periodically and I had light from the street lights. I painted with a group, some had lights on their hats and one guy had his light only on his palette. The light really glared off the canvas. I really didn't have any instruction, I did read Marc Hansons blog, he has been painting a lot at night lately. I just went for and had fun, it's only paint, right? Give it a try. I plan to tweek my painting some yet but I will post it here. Don't judge me too harshly, lol.
I love the softness of your landscapes, Barbara. They retain something of that blended muted feeling of oil colors.
