Red Poppies
Hello there, I just finished a 3 day workshop with the amazing artist Chuck Marshall. It was a plein air workshop, we worked in and out of the rain. We did a lot of starts, painting 3 or 4 paintings each day. I came home after and made notes for myself, things to keep reminding myself, "block in the large shapes", "lay on clean colors on top with a gentle touch" and most importantly for me think "design, design, design".
I painted this one recently, acrylics on a 8 x 10, 1 1/2" deep canvas. I toned the canvas red and allowed a lot of that red to peek through. This was painted mostly with a palette knife and at the end I allowed thinned down red paint to drip from my poppies.
So happy to see you, you do know I can see you don't you? hmm, lol

sounds like a great time! Thanks for the re-cap!
Je sens que vous avez passé des moments bien remplis et délicieux...
Merci de nous montrer ce tableau avec ces merveilleux coquelicots...
Une harmonie de couleurs fantastiques.
Gros bisous.
It sounds like you really enjoyed this workshop, Barbara. Very nice piece!!!
Hi Maria, Chuck is a great teacher and workshops are hard, lol.
Thank you Martine, Great to see you.
Hi Hilda, I did enjoy the workshop, so glad the heat let up a bit for it. Happy you like this too.
This is exciting, Barbara - I love the way you let a little of the paint run. And the background is amazing, as well. A beautiful and interesting piece!
Well thanks so much Connie, I am trying hard to make my paintings more interesting too as we all are.
This is lovely. I like your colors very much and the drippy effect is just enough (in my opinion) to make the painting more intriguing.
I really appreciate your nice comment Julie. Please stop by again.
This is a great painting, Barbara!!
The red toning is my main tactic!! Love to leave it peeking through. It harmonizes and energizes the entire painting!
I like your three things to remember: "large shapes", "lay on clean colors on top with a gentle touch" and "design".
To lay on clean, thick painterly strokes with a light touch is, in my mind, a real difference maker.
Happy painting!
Thanks for your kind supportive comment Dean. I love the way you use your toned backgrounds to make a statement too. It's just so fun to try different things all the time. I cannot imagine ever getting tired of painting, it is never the same. I always enjoy visiting you, you continually stretch yourself.
Beautiful painting, Barbara...again, having found your blog so recently, I hope you don't mind my coming late to the table and commenting!
