Street performer

Hi, I have been working on this for a while and I think I may be finished. This is oil on a 11 X 14 canvas panel. I may enter this one in a local juried show in August. Do you like it? Do you see anything you would change? I turned the canvas on the side and felt it gave it a more casual feel and the microphone leads you right to his face. Appreciate your input. :)

I just wanted to add that after posting the photo I see some things to change. The hat goes back too far in the back and looks flat and the brim is too large and a bit hard edged. Things really stand out when you take a photo and view in on your computer. Do you agree with my assessment?

I can't advise you about what I'd change or not. I think you've got a great pallette working in this painting and one trick that really helps me have a fresh eye at looking at a work is to both hang it upside down and look at it, and also look at it in a mirror. (the mirror trick really makes things that shouldn't be there pop out).

Hi Patrice, I appreciate you visiting and thank you for your advice. I did turn it upside down but haven't looked at it in the mirror yet. That's why this network of artists is so great, remind us of things we know but forget. :)

I've heard the best is the mirror one but haven't done it myself yet - maybe it's time I started! This looks pretty good to me and I wish you the best for acceptance to the show in August. Lovely face full of character.

Hello Liz, thank you, I liked his face too and the pouty lip. I'll work on him some more and maybe repost it.

a photo or reverse mirror image does work great. Maybe it is a little hard edge on the hat but I guess if I was to change that concept I might darken the background behind the hat too.
I like the jolley appearance of the fellow. A happy painting.

Hi Gary, I appreciate your suggestion and I may darken that area when I work on the hat. Appreciate your visit.

There is a lovely face of great character Barbara. Glad you chose him! I like the subdued palette and the dark tonal area behind his head and yes, the mike does help to lead in to the painting. I think you are right about the hat and perhaps it does go back a tad too far. But you are so right about not seeing some of these things until we take a pic. The number of times I "post" a painting on my blog and then think - uh-uh it's not right and I set to working on it again. Sometimes I end up re-posting 3 or 4 times before I am satisfied!

Hi Sheila, Always nice to have you stop by. I am going to post him again, I have been working on it and hopefully he is improved. Is there ever the perfect painting? lol
