My version of "The Kiss"

Hope you are enjoying your Sunday afternoon, rainy here but rainy days can be nice. Here is my final version of my take on Klimt's painting The Kiss. The first photo posted is the original painting by Klimt. I am posting the steps, hopefully you will find that interesting. I painted this on a 20" x 20" stretched canvas, the edges are 1 1/2" so I will not be framing it. I toned the canvas with gesso and some acrylic paint mixed in. The I used modeling paste and applied it with a palette knife, I wanted the garment to be three dimensional. I checked with Liquitex because I had never used the modeling paste and she suggested another coat of gesso over the modeling paste before applying oils. I painted this with oils and you can see some of the changes it went through. I sketched it on freehand and during the process put a smile on her face and a flower in her redesigned hand. I wanted the viewer to feel how in love she is, I wanted her to glow and I even radiated some orange tones into her hair. I used a palette knife to apply their hair also. The last two photos are the finished painting, a full shot and a close up. My daughter came up with the name, "Bliss" and I am going with that. I will submit the piece on Jan. 30th , I am just hoping it gets into the show. Once in it will hang for a month or so and there is prize money involved. So, wish me luck and I'll let you know. If not, I really had a great time trying something new.

2-01-2010- Just wanted to add this, I heard from the gallery today and my piece did get in, woo hoo.

This turned out so beautiful...it glows! Did you use some gold leaf? Just gorgeous.

Barbara Pask said...

Hi Gwen, Thanks so much. I did not use gold leaf but I know others that did. The original was gold leaf with a copper background I think. Also I learned the painting was square. The opening is this Saturday, can't wait to see the entrants.

Barb, this is beautiful. I love that Klimt painting and I love rainy days. Here in Southwest Florida, the weather has been more like New England than the tropics. I love it :D
