Mason, Ohio-plein air

Hi there, This is another one of the paintings done out in town this year. I just keep adding to my collection and I'll have to decide which ones I want to put in the show in December. I think they will take anything we bring, hopefully. This is one of the old houses in town and there is an insurance agency in there now. The color of the awning drew me to it. This is oil on a 8 X 10 stretched canvas.

I guess I'll have to look at things from that side of the street again! ...or maybe I'll tackle those Dutch Colonials if the light's right. Awning and the tree shadows make this one!

Thank you Don, it is tough trying to figure out what to paint sometimes isn't it? We just have to keep at it don't we?

My favourite - Barbara's houses!

First of all, Country pond is excellently painted, Barbara. As for this house, both you and the estate agents have reserved a lovely historical home, they by utilizing it and you by making this painting!

Thanks Liz!

Thank you very much Marie. I do feel as artists we are preserving history. So often we paint a location and then next thing you know they have torn in down. I hate that, we don't seem to respect old things.

Hi Barb, your oils always look so effortless. How do you do such straight lines?

Barbara Pask said...

Hi Fay, Thank you, some are more effort than others, you know how that goes, lol. I sometimes sketch out my painting first quickly with a pencil and sometimes pull out my t-square to check my vertical lines. Most of the time I just sketch with thinned down burnt umber and just keep adjusting as I paint, oils are great for that. I try not to have too many hard edges even in buildings, I use my palette knife and thicker paint sometimes where I want you eye to go in the light area.

pallet knife.... thats a great Idea. See I have a lot to learn when it comes to these oils!

Palette knife work is fun Fay, I think it makes for a much more interesting painting up close.
