Palette Knife Portrait
Susan Carlin has been painting portraits with a palette knife lately, she's amazing at it. I told her she could paint with her toes, lol. She did a live broadcast yesterday and completed three palette knife portraits while we watched. I thought I'd take a stab at it and here she is, it was fun to do. Not up to Susan's standards but more good practice. We had a live model this morning at my Monday morning painting group, first time I've painted a live person. I chose a bad position to stand in, I was directly in front of her. The painting came out fair, not exactly like her and the straight on view made it look a bit like a mug shot. I figure everything I do good or bad is good practice and it was fun. This is painted in oil on a 8 X 10 canvas panel. What'd you think?

Well, Wah HOOOO for you! And do I detect that you went a little deeper in some of your values, too? Something about that knife encourages one to be bolder, too, I think. This looks great, Barb.
Barbara, this is very nice. Wasn't Susan's painting live lots of fun. You did great from a live model, too!
Later....
Thank you Susan "great goddess of portrait painting" I'm so glad you like it. I am trying to put in darker darks. It was fun to give this a try, I haven't used a palette knife much. I'll be ready for another demo anytime you're up to it.
Hi there Jo, I couldn't believe Susan completed three paintings, she's a ball of energy. So glad you like this.
Hi Barbara,
This is very fresh! You have captured the spirit of the model very well. The painting is fun and it looks like you had fun painting it.
Wah Hoooo!!! This looks wonderful. And , a live model! Talk about a little "fun" pressure, when you are learning something new. But, it may have helped you , just keep going.
It looks great.
I haven't started mine. But, I will.
Amy
Hi Anita, Glad you stopped by again, never know what you'll find here, lol.
Hi Amy, It was fun to do, you do need to try it. Wonder how many people paint a portrait with a palette knife???? Susan is fearless and so talented.
Thanks for the comments on my work. I myself have never tried painting with a knife. You have my admiration! And there's nothing like painting from a live model!!
Thank you Lani, I'm sure it would be no problem for you, your work is outstanding. Glad you stopped by
