Portrait of my daughter
Hi, I watched Susan Carlin paint live yesterday, she painted a portrait of herself looking in a mirror. She did a wonderful job as always. I had thought today I might try a portrait of myself but as you can see I painted a portrait of my daughter instead. I started this at my painting group this morning and just finished it, I think. This was from a photo taken on her wedding day. I started out with her head down lower and as I kept adjusting things it moved up, part of the learning process. Susan makes it look so easy but it's a new challenge for me. It's in oil on a 11 X 14 canvas panel. See you soon

Hi Barb. It looks good.
I find portraits extremely hard. I think they are easier from life than a photo almost.
I watched the first part of a Jeremy Lipking video of a portrait sketch. He just starts from one eye and works his way out making accurate measurements as he goes.
Have not seen the finish yet.
Jeremy is amazing. I painted almost all of this with a #12 brush again, I'm trying to keep it loose so it's more of an impression of the person. I think when you paint really tight every little detail has to be exact. I never thought I'd be interested in painting portraits but never say never.
Nice work, Barbara. I do like the looseness which I think is difficult to achieve. I only paint portraits when I wish to punish myself! Connie
Hi Connie, yes punish is a good way to put it, lol. Thanks for you comment.
You are really growing with your art. You Go girl!!!!!! Love the smile you captured.
Thanks for stopping by.
Thank you so much Pat, I'm working hard at it.
I love it. Very personal and meaningful. That is difficult to convey. I have been commissioned to do a portrait and I am very scared.
Hi Anita, I'm so glad you like it. Portraits are something new for me, it's so hard to get an exact likeness of the person, that's why I'm using a larger brush trying to keep things a bit looser. Man, it's a challenge. I tried to do a self portrait yesterday and wiped it off. I think most of all I don't like the way I look, lol. Hope things go well for you.
Hi! Your portrait of your daughter looks very good. I think it's especially hard to paint someone you know as well as a daughter. All those notions we have of them gets in the way of the real. You're so sweet to mention me in your post!
Hi Susan, I keep trying to paint portraits, something keeps drawing me back, lol.
Barbara,
Lovely blog. My favorite painting is "Relaxing". Beautiful pose and lighting.
Best wishes!
