Days Gone By

Hello, I know I haven't posted much this week but I have been painting. I worked a bit more on the portrait of my daughter, I did more work on a still life that I had started and I painted and wiped off a self portrait. I don't think I'm going to try anymore self portraits unless I paint one from a Glamour Shots photo I had taken 15 years ago, lol. I went to a drawing class on Thursday, first time to draw a naked man. First several sketches were of his face, lol. This painting was done from a photo I took last fall at a park where they were all dressed in period costume. These two fellows were resting under a tree. I tried to keep it loose and not play with the paint too much. It's on a 8 X 10 canvas panel. Hope your painting adventures are going well.

I like this! This painting has a very fresh loose feel to it. The paint looks thick and juicy and I think you've captured the spirit of the kids.

Thank you so much Anita, I tried to lay the paint down and not play with it much. I admire painters that paint like that, confident strokes.

Yes, you did capture their spirit and the composition is good too.
You mentioned that your paintings are lacking in light and I wanted to share that I recently began to consciously keep my darks dark, there by creating a value range which lets me 'Pop' the lights. Another thing I don't do is overuse white. White deadens color and kills sparkle.
I mix my colors and then add a teeny bit of white just to the edge of the mixture to see if I'm getting the color I want. It also helps to establish that pop of light at the beginning of the painting so that you can adjust accordingly and still get that zing.
Thanks for stopping by my blog, Barb, I so appreciate it!

Thank you Mary, You're very generous to share what works for you. I did recently start using a color called "beige", Susan Carlin uses it. It will lighten but it's warm not cool like white. I love paintings with great light and shadow but I sure struggle with it. Thanks again.

This painting is warm and nostalgic. The colors are lovely, and like Neetzy, I agree it also has a fresh loose feel to it.
What is this "beige"? I just started experimenting with oils and I would love to learn.
Great blog, Barbara!

Hi Anita and welcome. Thank you so much for your nice comments. The paint I'm talking about is simply called Beige, it's by Lukas. I found it on line at Blick art supplies. It must have a touch of yellow in it and I like it for portraits and landscapes. Let me know if you purchase some and how you like it.
